Marathon Season 2 to Add PvE Modes and Reduce Grind After Player Backlash
Bungie announced major changes for Marathon Season 2, including PvE-focused experiments, improved matchmaking and reduced grind.
Marathon Season 2 will introduce PvE-focused experiments, improved matchmaking systems and reduced progression grind after Bungie acknowledged growing criticism over the game’s onboarding and balance issues.
Bungie admitted that Marathon has become difficult for new players following its launch three months ago. Game Director Joe Ziegler said the current onboarding system ends too early after a brief tutorial, leaving players to navigate complex systems and compete against experienced veterans without adequate guidance.
According to the studio, progression with in-game factions currently feels overly demanding, particularly for players without dedicated teams or significant time investment. Bungie said upcoming updates will focus on accessibility and reducing frustration tied to the game’s economy and extraction mechanics.
Season 2 Introduces PvE Experiments
The upcoming Marathon Season 2 update will partially move away from the title’s strict PvP structure. Bungie plans to reveal more details during the week of May 25, including new modes centered on cooperative objectives and lower-risk progression systems.
The studio aims to create an environment where players can progress without constantly risking the loss of all their equipment. The update is expected to soften the current “all-or-nothing” extraction loop that many players criticized after launch.
Bungie also confirmed changes to matchmaking algorithms following complaints about repetitive endgame gameplay on the Cryo-Archive map. Players previously criticized grenade-heavy combat, sniper-dominated encounters and aggressive spawn-rushing strategies that reduced tactical variety.
Long-Term Roadmap Extends Into 2027
Marathon Season 2 is scheduled for release at the end of May 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Planned additions include the Sentinel-Shell, the Night Marsh Zone and an expanded Vault system.
In a studio statement, Bungie said future updates will focus on new zones, weapons, loot systems and seasonal progression mechanics designed to encourage cooperation and long-term engagement within the game’s Tau Ceti setting.
“We want to build on this with new content and systems that challenge players in new ways to grow, cooperate and compete while surviving the deadly environments of Tau Ceti,” the studio said.
Bungie’s roadmap extends into 2027. Season 3 is expected to overhaul the onboarding experience, while Season 4 will focus on improving the depth of the game’s extraction loop. It remains unclear whether the planned changes will be enough to bring back players who already left the game.
