Subnautica 2 Reaches Early Access Amid Ongoing Krafton Dispute

Subnautica 2 enters Early Access with new biomes, optional co-op gameplay, and upgraded Unreal Engine 5 visuals despite the ongoing conflict between Krafton and Unknown Worlds.

Subnautica 2 has officially entered Early Access despite the ongoing public dispute between publisher Krafton and developer Unknown Worlds over alleged bonus payments worth up to 250 million dollars. During an extensive online presentation attended by Golem, the development team focused almost entirely on the game itself rather than the conflict surrounding its release.

Unknown Worlds described Subnautica 2 less as a traditional survival title and more as an exploration-focused experience. Design Lead Anthony Gallegos said survival mechanics such as crafting, oxygen management, and resource gathering are primarily intended to push players deeper into unknown underwater regions.

A New Alien Ocean World

The sequel leaves behind Planet 4546B from the previous games and introduces a completely new alien world filled with unfamiliar creatures, plants, and biomes. Players will once again begin with limited tools, dangerous dives, and constant pressure from oxygen shortages.

Unknown Worlds confirmed that the game will continue avoiding traditional quest markers and permanent navigation systems. Players are expected to discover objectives, crafting paths, and exploration routes on their own.

Technically, Subnautica 2 receives a major upgrade through Unreal Engine 5, including Nanite and Lumen technologies. According to the studio, the new engine allows for denser underwater environments and more advanced creature behavior.

During the presentation, developers demonstrated creatures interacting with each other and attacking coral structures rather than reacting only to the player. The studio said modern CPUs and Unreal Engine 5 made these more complex systems possible.

Biological Upgrades and Optional Co-Op

A major gameplay addition is a biological adaptation system that allows players to inherit traits from alien organisms. Unknown Worlds explained that temporary “Biomods” and permanent upgrades will unlock new abilities and playstyles over time.

The base-building system has also been expanded to offer more flexibility and creativity compared to earlier games.

The largest change, however, is the addition of an optional co-op mode supporting up to four players. The feature has sparked debate among fans who consider isolation a core part of the original game’s atmosphere.

Unknown Worlds repeatedly emphasized that co-op is entirely optional. Gallegos stated that players will not be forced into multiplayer and can freely separate from one another, preserving the feeling of being alone in deep and dangerous waters.

Early Access Content and Release Details

The studio also confirmed that the series will maintain its largely non-violent approach. Instead of eliminating threats directly, players are encouraged to avoid, distract, and survive encounters with dangerous creatures.

The Early Access version includes approximately 14 to 20 hours of content, more than ten biomes, several Leviathan-class creatures, and new vehicles. Unknown Worlds expects the Early Access period to continue for at least two years, similar to previous entries in the series.

Subnautica 2 launches in Early Access for 30 euros on Windows PC via Steam and on Xbox Series X/S. According to Unknown Worlds, the game previously held the top position on Steam’s wishlist rankings for nine months despite the ongoing controversy involving Krafton and the studio.
