Wear OS 7 Officially Unveiled With Widgets, Gemini and Better Battery Life

Google has introduced Wear OS 7 with new widgets, Gemini AI support, real-time updates and improved battery efficiency.

Google has officially introduced Wear OS 7 during Google I/O 2026, unveiling a series of new features focused on battery efficiency, widgets and artificial intelligence for smartwatches. The new version of the wearable operating system is based on Android 17 and is expected to roll out later this year.

The update adds new widgets, live information updates and support for Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, on selected smartwatch models. Google also said devices upgrading from Wear OS 6 could see up to 10% better battery life thanks to system optimizations.

Widgets and Real-Time Updates Added

One of the main additions in Wear OS 7 is a new widget system similar to Android widgets, but redesigned for smaller smartwatch displays. Widgets will be available in compact 2×1 and 2×2 formats.

The operating system also introduces real-time updates that allow users to view live information directly from the watch face or apps with a quick glance.

Improved Media Controls and Fitness Tracking

Google has updated media controls with features such as automatic content playback depending on the application being used. The company also improved audio output handling for connected devices.

Fitness tracking features received updates through Wear Workout Tracker, which now supports the v5 watch face format. The company said the changes are intended to improve workout monitoring and customization options for users.

Gemini AI Coming to Selected Watches

Google confirmed that Gemini integration will only be available on selected smartwatch models launching later this year. The AI assistant will support voice-based task automation and integration with third-party applications through a new API.

According to Google, users will be able to perform actions such as managing tasks and placing orders through voice commands powered by Gemini AI.

Developers can already access Wear OS 7 through the Wear OS 7 Canary emulator ahead of the public release planned for later this year.
