Germany 2G Shutdown 2028: Telekom, Vodafone and O2 Timelines

Germany’s 2G shutdown is set for 2028. Here is what Telekom, Vodafone and O2 plan, and which phones and IoT devices may be affected.

Germany 2G shutdown 2028 is moving closer after O2 Telefónica confirmed that it will switch off its 2G network in the second half of 2028. With Telekom and Vodafone already announcing their plans, Germany is now preparing for the end of GSM as a widely available mobile standard.

2G, also known as GSM, has been used mainly for phone calls and SMS. O2 said the technology has reached the end of its life cycle after around 30 years. The frequencies released by the shutdown are expected to be used for 4G and 5G services.

When Germany’s 2G Networks Will Shut Down

The three major German mobile network operators are planning to end 2G service in 2028, although their timelines are not identical.

  • Telekom plans to shut down its 2G network on June 30, 2028.
  • Vodafone plans to switch off 2G for most private and business customers in September 2028, with a possible extension for some critical IoT applications until the end of 2030.
  • O2 Telefónica plans to shut down 2G in the second half of 2028, but has not announced an exact date.

The shutdown means that GSM will no longer be available as a standard fallback network for many older devices in Germany.

Which Phones Will Be Affected?

Most mobile users are not expected to be affected by the 2G shutdown. Modern smartphones usually support 4G, 5G and voice calls over LTE.

The main risk concerns very old phones that only support 2G or do not work properly with newer voice services such as VoLTE. Users with older handsets should check whether their device supports LTE and voice calls over modern mobile networks.

What Happens to Calls and SMS?

Phone calls and SMS are expected to continue working on compatible devices through newer network technologies. Many calls already use LTE-based voice services rather than older GSM infrastructure.

Users with older devices should check device settings, technical specifications or operator guidance before the shutdown dates arrive.

IoT Devices and Alarm Systems May Need Attention

The shutdown may be more important for companies and operators of older connected systems. Some machines, alarm systems, fire detection systems and other M2M or IoT devices may still rely on 2G connections.

Businesses should review their SIM cards, connected devices and service contracts before 2028. Systems that still depend on GSM should be moved to 4G, 5G or another supported technology in time.

Why 2G Is Being Switched Off

Network operators want to reuse low-band mobile frequencies for newer technologies. These frequencies can help improve 4G and 5G capacity, including in rural areas.

The operators expect the transition to be similar to the earlier 3G shutdown. However, users and companies with older devices should check their equipment early to avoid service interruptions.
