How to Recover Deleted Notes in Microsoft OneNote

Learn how to restore deleted OneNote notes using backup files, OneDrive synchronization, and built-in recovery tools on desktop and web versions.

Microsoft Office OneNote provides built-in backup and synchronization tools that help users recover deleted notes across desktop and web platforms. The note-taking application supports text, images, documents, and links while automatically saving content through local storage and cloud synchronization.

OneNote is designed for both personal use and team collaboration. Shared notebooks allow multiple users to work together while changes are synced automatically across devices. The software also supports offline and online access, helping users manage notes efficiently.

How OneNote Stores Notes

OneNote automatically saves and syncs notebooks without requiring users to manually save files. Because of this system, there is no traditional Save button in the application.

  • Default storage location: OneDrive or the local Windows Documents folder.
  • OneNote for Mac: All notebooks are stored through OneDrive, and local notebook creation is not supported.

The platform also includes features such as OCR support and notebook sharing, allowing users to manage and search content more effectively.

Recovering Deleted Notes From Backups

If a notebook is stored locally and not synchronized with OneDrive, deleted notes can be restored through OneNote backup files.

  1. Open OneNote and go to File > Info.
  2. Select the “Open Backups” option.
  3. Choose the notebook and open the relevant backup file.

Once the backup is opened, users can restore pages by right-clicking the note and using the Move or Copy option to return it to its original location.

Recovering Deleted Notes Through OneDrive Sync

For notebooks synchronized through OneDrive, deleted notes can also be restored directly within OneNote.

  1. Go to View > Deleted Notes.
  2. Alternatively, right-click the notebook and select “View Deleted Notes”.
  3. Right-click the deleted page tab and use the Move or Copy command to restore it.

In the Windows app version, users can monitor synchronization status through the cloud icon located in the top-right corner of the interface.

Web and Mobile Recovery Options

The web version of OneNote offers nearly the same recovery features as the desktop application. Deleted notes can be restored using the same steps available on desktop devices.

However, the mobile version of OneNote does not currently support deleted note recovery. Users who want to restore lost notes from smartphones must use either the desktop or web version of the service.

Sticky Notes and Samsung Notes Integration

Sticky Notes, which works alongside OneNote, does not support recovery for deleted notes. The application is intended for simple and fast note-taking.

Sticky Notes also synchronizes with Samsung Notes through a Microsoft account, allowing users to access notes within the OneNote ecosystem. Despite this integration, deleted notes from these companion apps cannot be restored.

Microsoft OneNote continues to offer multiple recovery and backup options through its desktop and web platforms, helping users minimize the risk of permanent data loss.
